SELEZIONE VINI

The history of vines and wines goes back a long way.
The oldest existing testimony of the knowledge and use of this noble drink,
obtained by fermenting grape juice, dates to the fourth millennium B.C.
As far as Italian wines and vines are concerned, there are some references first
of all from the Etruscans and, later, from the Greeks and Romans.
Throughout this period Campania continued to be one
of the main centres for the development of vines and wines.
The Etruscans “mated” the vines to long-stemmed plants, a system that is used
only in very limited areas today, mainly in Campania, in the countryside around
Aversa.
In the Magna Grecia colonies in Campania, wine enjoyed a prominent position, as
can be seen in the so called “diver’s tomb” (Paestum, fifth century B.C.); it is
the unique example of Greek painting portraying scenes of a banquet and the
effect of wine on the banqueters.
But, it was only in Roman times, when the vine was finally “domesticated” by
using posts and resorting to intense yearly pruning, that viticulture in
Campania reached the height of its splendour and fame.
The most interesting archaeological sites in the world, Pompeii and Herculaneum,
are the most complete sources of evidence regarding the customs of the period
and make frequent references to wine. Paintings, sculptures and handicraft
highlight the prominent role that the Region of Campania had in developing and
spreading the “culture of wine”.
Quality wines were preserved in terracotta amphoras, sealed with “pittacium”
(tags) where the area of origin of the grapes and the year of the harvest were
recorded. It can therefore be argued that the concept of DOC or “controlled
denomination of origin” was established in Campania. In other words, there was
an awareness of the primary importance of the territory in relation to quality
of wines.
It’s not by chance that the wines drunk by the Roman emperors were from
Campania; the grape varieties used, and still used today, were selected
according to their qualitative attributes, discarding varieties unlikely to
produce quality wines.
This enormous heritage represents the real wealth of wine growing in Campania
that has become the guardian and exploiter of the best national wine-making
tradition.
In fact, Campania has kept its distance from passing trends, concentrating on
preservation and exploitation of an unique array of grape varieties that has
remained uncontaminated. The grape varieties, and therefore also the wines, from
Campania are unique for the strong influence the environment exercises over
them; they would not be able to
The region is extremely rich in local varieties (about 70), although not all of
them have been identified and classified. Campania produces 20 DOC wines and 1
DOCG, Taurasi, the highest classification for a wine.
